ISSUE 06

THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Dear Flora Vista Community Members,

I wanted to extend a HUGE shout-out to YOU, our FV community, for the turn-out at our Movie Night, and especially for your support for the distancing and masking protocols that allow us to continue to do these on-campus events. I am very grateful, and I hope your family had as much fun as mine did.  We look forward to additional socials and movie nights this year!

This week marks the beginning of “Start with Hello” week at Flora Vista. A project of Sandy Hook Promise, Start with Hello helps to create a culture of inclusion. At FV, we usually launch Start with Hello with schoolwide assemblies, but this year the presentations & discussions are taking place in each individual class. The ideas in Start with Hello thread throughout the year, alongside our TRAC program and the social emotional learning that our classroom teachers are now integrating so intentionally. An inclusive school community creates a safer, more connected school for all!

Start Time Reminder:

Please remember there are no staggered start times this year. Gates open at 7:45A.M., and school starts at 8:00A.M. We understand there will be those rare mornings when it takes your family’s entire village to get the kids to school at all, but on regular mornings, please try to make it a priority to be inside the classroom at 8:00 A.M. It does disrupt the classroom to have students arrive late, and it creates anxiety for the child walking in late.

Parent Conferences:

Thank you to EUSD and our Teachers of Encinitas (TOE) for collaborating to develop the protocols that will allow each family to to choose between a virtual or in-person parent conference in October. It’s no easy task to build consensus on how to provide safety for all members of our community! Please remember, one adult per household, and a snug-fitting mask is required.

Lastly, I’d like to appeal for your support with our PTA/EEF Falcon Fund. In addition to taking care of school supplies again this year, and teacher/grade level allocations to support tailored learning opportunities, your child’s enrichment offerings depend on this support (science, art, drama). FV students love their enrichment!

In Gratitude,

Chris Juarez

Principal

Outdoor Movie Night Was A Huge Success!

We held our annual EEF/PTA Fall Movie Night under the stars on Friday, September 18th on the field at Flora Vista. The sunset was beautiful and so was the crowd!

Over 250 people attended the free event, practiced social distancing, and watched the movie Trolls.  It was great to see so many of our grades in attendance all singing, dancing, and laughing along to the movie, all while helping us build our strong Flora Vista community. A special thank you to PTA President Jeff Ladman, EEF President, Ally Hanlon and her crew, Kirsty Wilson, Lauren McCosta, Kristen Beyer among many others. It takes a village... and Flora Vista has one of the best.

Calling All Creative Minds!

PTA Reflections welcomes students of all grades and abilities to explore their inner artist!

Please support your child in expressing their imagination and sharing it with our school and community.  Entries will be submitted virtually and are due by Monday, October 25th.  Category rules can be found here, and a digital entry form will be included in a future newsletter.  If your student is planning on participating please email christine.lustig@gmail.com or tls8221@hotmail.com so we can get you the necessary information and/or answer any questions.

Staff Feature of the Week...Rose Clarke

Hello Falcons - Meet Rose Clarke!

Please say hello to our new TRAC teacher, Rose Clarke. We're lucky to have Social Emotional Learning at our school (the Encinitas Union School District is offering TRAC to all it's students) and it is a critical part in shaping well rounded students. If you get the chance please say hello to Rose and welcome her to Flora Vista!

Read her letter below:

Dear Flora Vista Families,

My name is Rose Clarke and this will be my first year at Flora Vista and my first year teaching TRAC! I was born and raised in Connecticut and now (along with my furry little pal, Jack) share my time between San Diego and Cape Cod, MA!

As an undergraduate, I attended the University of Delaware where I majored in Elementary and Special Education and received my DE credentials for both. I also minored in both Disability Studies and Human Development and Family Studies. Following undergrad, I followed my lifelong dream of moving to Southern California and pursued my Masters of Arts in Teaching at the University of Southern California, Rossier School of Education. Shortly after, I fell in love with San Diego and have now been teaching in the area since 2019. Social Emotional Learning has always been my favorite part of teaching and as a result, I am working towards earning a certificate in Character Education Development from the University of San Diego. I am so thrilled to be here at Flora Vista and look forward to a wonderful year ahead!”

Notes from the Lunch Tables

I love all the surprises I have the opportunity to see at our school. After turning around from helping a kid close up his lunchbox, I find a Marcel Duchamp worthy sculpture 'made' by the kids. Their creativity flows even when recycling.
