ISSUE 08

THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Thank you to EUSD and our Teachers of Encinitas (TOE) for collaborating to develop the protocols that will allow each family to choose between a virtual or in-person parent conference. It’s no easy task to build consensus on how to provide safety for all members of our community! Please remember these protocols, which allow the in-person opportunity to take place:

  • Parents will be able to choose an in-person conference or a virtual conference.
  • Each child will have one time slot either virtual or in person. As in our Back to School Night protocols, the conference will be limited to one adult per household. A child with two households may have both parents attend in person at the same time, or both parents attend on zoom at the same time.
  • Masks are required on campus the entire time families are attending conferences.
  • If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please communicate with the teacher prior to the conferences so that a virtual conference can be arranged at another time.
  • Teachers will be stationed at the front of the room and will use technology to project student work and data. Parents will sit at least 6 feet away from the teacher during the conference.
  • Some teachers may have a student attend or lead the conference, but this will be shared specifically from your child’s teacher. Siblings may not attend the conference.

Thank you for helping us to provide these on-campus opportunities!

Parent Connections:

We’re working hard on connecting students to their peers and to the adults on campus, building community through class/family meetings, TRAC lessons, Start with Hello, and more. Are YOU looking to feel more connected to what’s going on? Here are two ways!

  • PTA Meeting Tomorrow: Join us at the PTA Meeting via Zoom and hear some ways to get involved!
  • Be a Noon Supervisor: We’re always looking for additional help during the 2-hour lunch block. And this year, it’s still the “Golden Ticket “onto campus – come join us an FV Staff Member!

Antigen Testing:

If you would like your child to have the on-campus antigen testing in the event of an exposure, make sure you have submitted your consent form in the email from Primary Health, or look for the QR code that will be coming from EUSD soon.

In Gratitude,

Chris Juarez

Falcon Fund - Donate Today!

On behalf of the Flora Vista Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and the Flora Vista Encinitas Educational Foundation (EEF), we want to thank you as we have raised over $41,000 towards our goal of $75,000!

If you have not already, please consider donating to the Flora Vista Falcon Fund. Your donation supports our teachers and children by providing enrichment education that other schools can’t (science, art, and drama), AND classroom needs (supplies, fieldtrips, and grade-level mini-grants, etc.), AND other great programs (Reflections, Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Week, Flora Vista Reads, etc.). EVERY child benefits from these programs and the instruction provided, so we humbly ask that you please help support the Falcon Fund. (ALL donations are tax deductible to the FV PTA & EEF.)

Our 3 major fundraisers for the year are: The Falcon Fund Donation Drive, Gala & Auction, and the Jog-A-Thon. Donate online HERE or participate in our payment plan by clicking HERE.

Staff Feature of the Week...Karinne Yahne

Dear Flora Vista Families,

My name is Karinne Yahne and this will be my first year at Flora Vista and my eleventh year teaching. I was born and raised in Northern California, and although I moved away from San Diego after finishing my degree at SDSU, I returned the summer of 2018.

As an undergraduate, I attended San Diego State University where I majored in Elementary Education. After college, I got into the Washington DC Teaching Fellowship Program where I taught for four years. During that time, I completed my Masters’ Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at American University. I returned to California where I taught for one year at a charter school in San Francisco. I followed my love of teaching and travel to Australia and Indonesia where I taught at international schools for two years from 2016-2018 before returning to San Diego. In my spare time I like to travel (I’ve been to 44 countries so far…), exercise, and spend time with my three year old nephew, and one year old niece, who also live in San Diego. I couldn’t be happier to be here at Flora Vista and look forward to a wonderful year ahead!

Calling all 4th - 6th Graders!

Flora Vista 4th-6th graders have the opportunity to participate in a CDFA (California Department of Food and Agriculture) grant-funded project that includes promoting EUSD farm-to-school efforts, running a monthly farm stand after school (that offers produce grown at Farm Lab!), and leading food recovery and waste diversion projects on site with our environmental consultants, BCK. Creative environmental stewards wanted!!

There will be three opportunities to participate this year; each block will run 8-10 weeks. During each block, there will be a weekly time commitment of 40 minutes on Wednesdays during the school day (the last 20 minutes of lunch followed by 20 minutes of class time) and the running of a farm stand one Wednesday each month after school. (Set up time will occur at the end of the school day.)

If supporting healthy kids and a healthy planet inspires your student, please encourage them to apply to be a Seed to Soil Farm Stand Ambassador! There is a QR code on the flier, or you can access the online application here.

Hope to see you at the farm stand!

Reflections

Does your child enjoy making videos? Dancing? Writing? Photography? Composing music? Drawing? Creating?

The Reflections program gives your student an opportunity to show their talents in any of these areas!

1.Students pick from one of six categories and create an art piece based on the theme "I will change the world by..." Please check out the category information and rules, found at https://capta.org/resource/reflections-materials-for-ptas/

2. This week, (October 4-8), Ms. Morsher will be providing time during ART Wheel for all students to brainstorm, plan or work on their projects. This gives the student the following two weeks to complete it at home with NO adult direction.

2. Digital art submissions and a statement relating their art to the theme are due on Monday, October 25th. The entry form can be found here.  Please note: a Google account is required to submit and upload your submission. If you do not have a Google Account, please let us know and we can figure out an alternative method to submit your child's work.

(Submissions in the visual arts category will need to be submitted physically as well as digitally on a later date- TBD).

3. Entries will be judged by local art enthusiasts. The three criteria used for judging are: interpretation of the theme, creativity, and technique. The top 4 submissions from each category per each grade division will move onto the next level. (North Council PTA)

4. All submitted entries will be awarded a certificate and shown at an art gallery during our school Gratitude Festival on Sunday, November 7th.

If you have any questions please email Christine Lustig (christinelustig@gmail.com ) or Tianne Watson (tls8221@hotmail.com)- we would love to help!

Notes from the Lunch Tables

Hello Falcons,

The other day during school, before lunch I saw 6th graders and 1st graders sitting outside in small groups working together. I asked one of the groups "what's going on?" and the first graders all started talking over one another saying "these are our big buddies," "these are my new friends." The sixth graders silently looked like they were above it all, naturally. I could tell though that this moment of inspired mentorship meant a lot to everyone involved and it was really cool to witness. I was reminded of the SOAR program that was so robust before the pandemic. Leave it to our teachers to foster these kinds of collaborations at school. My experience through SOAR is the mentors usually get more out of these then the kids in the long run - anyone who has a kid brother or sister knows this. I know how excited my kids get when a "cool" sixth grader even just says hello. Every school has hierarchies but these mentorship moments are good for everyone. Keep it up.

I hope you all have a great week.
