ISSUE 10

THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Welcome Back, Falcons!

Dear Flora Vista Families,

I hope your fall break was a wonderful opportunity to spend some quality time connecting with your family and other loved ones in your circle. We’re in the season where the next couple months will go by before you know it, so please make sure to stay connected with your child’s teacher(s) about how your child is doing in school, how you can help support him/her/them in & out of school - and any ways you can help out! Until volunteers are able to be on campus, there are still ways to feel connected, such as helping with after-school PTA/EEF events, helping prep or donate supplies for art/science lessons, helping with lunch supervision, and more!

While I have written on multiple occasions about the FV/EUSD intentional effort to support the social-emotional needs of students and the wellbeing of staff, this week I want to highlight the same for parents, by sharing a couple resources that came across my desk the last couple weeks. The first is a link my own wife shared with me, “The Impact of Parental Burnout: What Psychological Research Suggests About How to Recognize and Overcome It.” I have read countless articles on parenting, and this was one of the BEST. The second is a webinar offered by the San Diego County Office of Education, “Cultivating Emotional Resilience & Mental Fitness While Parenting” (flyer below). I hope you find one or both of these useful, and I look forward to our school & home community working together throughout the year to achieve a happy and successful year for our students, staff, AND parents!

In Gratitude,

Chris Juarez

Principal

Sharing Stories in October
October is a great month for sharing stories. Do you have a tale about the Fall season? Perhaps you prefer to share a scary story? Feel free to dress up and bring your story to life. This activity is open to students, teachers, and staff. You can view the community of stories online. They will also be broadcasted on the projector screen during recess/lunch in the library during the month of October.

If you plan to share a picture book, choose the link "Fall Stories Grade K-3" below. If you prefer to read a chapter book, choose the link "Fall Stories Grade 4-6" below:

Notes from the Lunch Tables

Hello Falcons,

I hope you're recovering from the "short" fall break, I know I am. It's difficult for me to remember yesterday, let alone a week ago. Here's a great exchange I had with a very bright fourth grader during our Red Ribbon Week Hat Day...

Me: Nice hat!

4th Grader: Mr. Jeff - it is so fun dressing up!

Me: It sure is.

4th Grader: Mr. Jeff, last year I couldn't dress up, or play on my team, or do hardly anything, but now we're together and I get to see my class and play games and dress up.

Me: That's so cool; a really good observation. What are you gonna do this weekend?

4th Grader: Well, I have a game but mainly I'm going to trick or treat, scare my family, eat a lot of candy, and read.

Me: Why reading?

4th Grader: Because candy doesn't tell stories.

...and she was off to play. She's right though, books will take you places candy corn will not.

Have a great week Flora Vista!
