THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Hello Flora Vista Families,

Like all those leaves of gratitude in the air at our wonderful Fall Festival, the fall season is dropping more and more good news upon our campus. Case rates are down, vaccines are finally available for kids, staff trainings/discussions are again about quality instruction (rather than distance learning), and the planning for traditional and fun events rolls on! The long, hard road of being safe is paying off, and I thank you for your ongoing vigilance!

Here is just a snapshot of some exciting events in the days ahead:

  • Bike Rodeo”, Monday, November 15, 4:00pm (flyer and more info below). A waiver is required, please download here.
  • Jog-a-Thon, December 9: Classes running with grade spans again!
  • The Book Fair Returns, Nov 30 - Dec 2: In Person!
  • 6th grade Camp: The County announced last week that Camp is back on! See info here

The Bike Rodeo is presented by the San Diego Bike Coalition as part of Walk & Bike to School Week, and parents are encouraged to join by bringing their own bike (and helmet), or helping out on foot. In addition, the SD Bike Coalition created three bike safety online learning modules, available at edpuzzle. All students who complete the modules will be entered in a raffle to win gift cards from a local bike shop.

One last note, this time with e-bikes and safety: Many students and families may not be aware of all the rules around e-bikes, so here is a link from the City of Carlsbad.

In Gratitude,

Principal Juarez

Let’s get around in people-powered ways!

Much Gratitude From Our Fall Festival

Hello Falcons,

Reflecting on the Fall Gratitude Festival Sunday, I thought about how nice it was to see so many families visiting, walking around the school reading the students' leaves, viewing the amazing art in the Reflections exhibit, taking beautiful photographs, gargantuan snow cones, music, arts, crafts and of course....puppies. I was thankful just to be able to be together.

At this time I would like to acknowledge Christine Lustig and Tianne Watson for putting on the Reflections contest and showing all the great student work artfully assisted by Ally Hanlon and Kristen Beyer. Also, Kyle Simon who took the amazing portraits; Kate Tobin and crew who stole the afternoon with those adorable puppies; all of the teachers and students who taught us what's really important to be grateful for; and lastly, Kirsty Mitchell who put together and managed the whole event with grace, ease, and style.  She is the unsung hero here!

Thank you Falcons for nesting with us that afternoon.

Library News

Hello Flora Vista Community,

Last Thursday, we had a recess webinar with National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman and illustrator Loren Long where they talked about their new book Change Sings. The entire event was captured on video and can be watched on YouTube through Dec. 19th here.

November is a great time to take stock of what we appreciate in our lives. I am thankful to be working at a school where the culture of reading is so high amongst our students. Several times already this year, a line has extended the length if the library at recess of students eager to check out books. It is wonderful to see! I am also thankful for all the support and encouragement as I have taken on this new role for the school. I wanted to especially thank 6th grade teacher Cathy O'Neill who is loaning me her copy of The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. In it, the author encourages all of us to carve out time in our schedules to read when can. So for the month of November, I urge all our Flora Vista families to take a break from their day with their students and cuddle up with a good book for at least 10 minutes.

Feel like sharing the experience? Take a photo and send it to sarah.wilson@eusd.net and I will upload them into a Padlet. Let our youth see Flora Vista as a community of readers!  Happy reading!

Notes from the Lunch Tables

Falcon Families and Friends,

Last week during our final recess after 1st & 2nd grade lunch there was a incident with some students making fun of another student which was taken care of promptly. The real story though, was the kid who was being made fun of....he's a bright, athletic, well-liked kid who was upset about the teasing. Instead of 'taking it' he shared his feelings and hurt. This took a lot of courage. While he told us about his feelings on being made fun of, which was a big fear for him, I was so impressed with how his friends gathered around him and rallied to his side. They were so supportive of their brave classmate as he shared his feelings. His teacher was told of all this by her students after lunch and was able to make the incident and aftermath into a teachable moment as well.

It's great to see our students displaying such empathy and support in dealing with their classmate....the future just might be in good hands.

Have a great week Falcons, be kind to one another.
