ISSUE 16

THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Dear FV Families,

It’s not a mirage, those really are volunteers I see on campus!
It’s true, we have had our first volunteers trickling onto campus, after almost 20 months away. I know I am not alone in celebrating this arrival. I have shared with more than a few people that it feels like coming up for air! One of the hallmarks of the Flora Vista community has always been the dedication of our volunteers and the partnership you and our teachers create with each other, and we cannot say enough about how GOOD that it feels to welcome you back!

Like other protocols in our return, EUSD is rolling out the return in stages, and safely, with vaccinated approved volunteers. All volunteers are required to check in through our visitor management system, which checks the Megan’s Law database. The first volunteers returning to campus are those assisting with PTA-sponsored and class events and extracurricular activities. The opportunities will expand starting at the end of January when teachers may begin to welcome classroom volunteers again to support instruction!

If your child has completed both of their vaccinations for Covid-19, please share that information with us. There are two ways to submit information.

1) You may upload the information using this Student C-19 Vaccination Record link or

2) You may bring a paper copy to the school office.

Please only submit records after your child has received both doses of the vaccine.

Thank you for your ongoing support over these last 20 months, and we hope to see you on campus soon!

Flora Vista Jog-A-Thon is Postponed

Attention Falcons, Families, and Friends:

Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of everyone at school, we will have to POSTPONE our beloved Jog-A-Thon due to the weather forecast. This past year and a half has taught us all to be flexible and pivot, and we do so now.

Due to our busy school calendars, the new Jog-A-Thon make-up date will be Thursday, January 13th, after winter break. We appreciate all of you that have contributed mightily to the JAT, and we'll continue to keep Pledgestar open and fundraise until we run in January.

At this time we wanted to acknowledge the great work of Ari Blocksidge and Wyatt Barrett, our Jog-A-Thon chairs; all teachers, staff, room parents, JAT captains, and most importantly, our students who've been working hard to make our run a success.

Keep running, Falcons! Continue to build your strength and endurance. We'll see you on the track in the new year.

Teacher Feature of the Week!

Though only in his second year at Flora Vista, Ron Parks has become a favorite of students, families and staff. He inspires his students to want to push themselves and learn. We're lucky to have him!

My name is Ron Parks and this is my second year here at Flora Vista Elementary.  I previously worked in Poway Unified for over 14 years.  I love to exercise, coach, listen to music, and watch television on my free time.  What you may not know about me is that I lived in Japan for 9 years and am proficient in speaking Japanese.  In the classroom, my first priority is my relationship with my students and cultivating an environment built on trust and mutual respect.  I try to make learning fun and connect my lessons to the real world as often as possible.  As a teacher, my biggest goal is for my students to leave my classroom everyday, wanting to come back the next day.

The Book Fair Was A Great Success!

At this year's book fair, we sold over $8,000 worth of books!  We were able to get a ton of new books to the teachers for their classrooms and in the media center already!  Our school gets back 50% of the sales (pre-tax) from Scholastic.  Thank You Falcon Families for an amazing 3 days!

Flora Vista Art Gallery

Take a look at all the beautiful art your students are doing in Wheel with the talented Mrs. Morsher.

This is a sampling of all the great things you don't get to see in the hallways of Flora Vista. Check it out here!

Ask your students about this project and their contributions to the "The Flora Vista Gallery."

Notes from the Lunch Tables

Hello Falcons,

Everyday I get to hang out with the students of Flora Vista for a few minutes. I'm constantly amazed by our kids' endless optimism and humor. Due to my 'Joke Of The Day' antics, I'm approached dozens of times during each of the lunch periods by students proudly stating "Mr. Jeff, I have a joke..."  These jokes are usually more funny than not, occasionally slightly inappropriate (usually having to do with bodily functions), and often with the younger kids cutely made up on the spot. I'll often hear the same jokes over and over; a current student repeat favorite I hear multiple times in a day: "What do you call a cheese that isn't yours?"...."Nacho cheese!" I often get really good jokes that I'll pass on at lunch too, usually with the preface, "My dad told me a joke..." This is all such a great way to meet the kids, interact, and have a little fun building connections. I get to put a face and name to shared laughter and smiles. I will always believe a smile is the best facelift.

Have a great week everyone and don't forget to laugh.

Jokes of the Day - Highlights

Did you hear about the person who drank a whole bottle of invisible ink?

They're at the Emergency Room waiting to be seen

What did the horse say when they fell over?

I've fallen and I can't giddy up
